Singapore Walks

December 31, 2006 · 2 Comments

These specially designed walks bring you to places that most tours don’t… Graveyards, smoke houses, haunted houses, archaeological sites, wet markets, gun batteries, funeral shops etc etc…

Not sure what to do next weekend? Try one of these walks…

Changi WWII Once the site of many prisoner-of-war camps during the Japanese Occupation, Changi has since gone down in history as a place of much pain, torture and human suffering. It is said that more Australian PoWs perished under incarceration than in battle itself. Whether it is on the Death Railway or the countless labour camps in Japan and Formosa (Taiwan), the Changi WWII trail commemorates the fight of brave men and women during battle and in internment. Hear their story… Walk covers The Changi Museum, Changi Beach (site of Sook Ching Massacre), Changi Village, Johore Battery (replica of WWII 15″ gun battery), outside Selarang Barracks (a Japanese PoW internment camp during WWII).

Secrets of the Red Lantern – A Chinatown Night Walk The lantern beckoned him. The new ah ku was pretty, fresh form Canton. High on opium, he made his way unsteadily towards the gas-lit brothel. In 1887, the brothels in Chinatown were as many and as close together as the teeth of a comb. Combine that with the proliferation of opium and gambling dens, it was sin city. It was no accident that Chinatown was also know as Bu Ye Tian – The Place of Nightless Days. Discover vice and tragedy in the shadows of fringes where entertainment, in its rawest form is still practiced today. Walk covers Trengganu Street, South Bridge Road, Food Street, Red Light District, Barbecued Pork Shop.

Smoother Traffic in 2007

December 30, 2006 · 1 Comment

The Fort Canning Tunnel (FCT) is slated for opening in Jan 07 after three years of construction.

The 350 metres long FCT will provide direct access for cars travelling from Marina Centre and the New Downtown to the Orchard area, allowing them to bypass the traffic light at the junctions of Stamford Road and Bencoolen Street as well as at Handy Road and Orchard Road.

The construction of FCT and consequent realignment of roads in the vicinity is congruent with the overall efforts to ensure the optimisation of land usage, especially in the prime area of the city. FCT was built to allow better utilisation of land and to ensure a more efficient land parcellation for the Singapore Management University’s development.
